Welcome from the Head of Sixth Form
Thank you for choosing Ruislip High School Sixth Form as a place for your child to continue with their education. The Sixth Form is well established and fosters independence whilst providing the support necessary to ensure that all students reach their potential. There are three key principles at the core of the Sixth Form experience at Ruislip High School: academic excellence; individualised pastoral care; and significant supercurricular and extracurricular activities.
At the centre of the academic experience for students is the excellent teaching that is seen throughout the school. Students are taught by dedicated and inspiring teachers who are all trained to teach the subject they deliver in the Sixth Form. They are additionally supported by two specialised Learning Mentors to assist with the demands of sixth form study - an enhanced staffing model that is unique to Ruislip High School Sixth Form to ensure that every student has the one-to-one support they need to fulfil their potential.
Students in the Sixth Form also receive outstanding pastoral support through a team of specially-trained tutors who support them with their examinations and research skills and prepare them for university and employment. In Year 12, for example, there is an entire week dedicated to supporting students in their university applications and career choices after Ruislip High School. In Year 13, every student receives specialist help in writing and editing their personal statements. As a result, Year 13 students have been successful in a range of university applications to Oxford and Cambridge to study subjects including Biomedicine, Biochemistry, Law, Natural Sciences, Human Sciences, History, English Literature, Earth Sciences, Architecture and Geography. Additionally, Year 13 students have been successful in applying to study Medicine at a range of UK universities.
Finally the school recognises that an excellent Sixth Form education is based on more than A-level grades expected to complete twenty-four hours of volunteering and enrichment time and they will have a wide range of activities to choose from, including sport and debating. The sixth form runs a successful guest speaker programme, which has included the Prime Minister Boris Johnson, UK diplomat to North Korea, Sir Richard Hoare, and many more.
Students are also invited to work with the lower year groups and our Sixth Form students provide invaluable support and encouragement to the rest of the school. In the past, there have been a varied range of Sixth Form trips on offer, from one-day visits to London, including the Houses of Parliament or the Institute of Physics, and more substantial international trips such as a visit to the Hadron Collider at CERN, Switzerland. We also offer a biannual trip to New York City and Washington D.C. which involves collaboration across subjects. In March 2018 and March 2020, Ruislip High School were one of a handful of UK schools who were chosen to send delegates to the Model United Nations General Assembly in New York; this trip will be offered to students again in March 2023.
In 2021, the school opened its new wing which includes a new state-of-the-art Sixth Form centre, right at the heart of the school. This has further improved the facilities our Sixth Formers have available to them and ensured that the Sixth Form centre looks as good as the education that it delivers.
We are very proud of the experience students have in the Sixth Form and aim to ensure they fulfil their academic potential as well as experience opportunities which will equip them for their future lives. All staff at Ruislip High School are dedicated to making our Sixth Form a great success, and we look forward to welcoming your child in September.
